MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is a film about the life of the former South African President, Nelson Mandela.

Violence

The film includes reconstructions of a number of violent and abusive historical events, including clashes between police and protestors and sight of people being killed. In general, little detail is shown, although there is some sight of blood on dead bodies. At one point, a man is set alight, although there is no focus on him burning. In a rioting scene, a woman is pinned to the ground by a man. At another point, a woman is strip searched in prison and is seen to flinch as the guard reaches down towards her genitals. However, there is no sight of contact between the guard and the woman.

Language

There is some moderate and mild bad language.

Sex

There are some scenes in which sex is briefly and discreetly indicated. For example, we see a couple kissing on a bed, after which the scene cuts away. In another scene, a woman takes her dress off, revealing her underwear.

There is some sight of bomb-making equipment, as well as scenes in which bombs are placed or detonated. However, there is no useful instructional detail of how to construct bombs. Further information is available for grown-ups on the BBFC website or the free BBFC app.

EPIC is an animated fantasy adventure about a girl who is shrunk to fairy-size. She becomes involved in the battle to save a forest from the forces of decay.

Violence

There are quite a few scenes of action violence, with the baddies and goodies facing off in battles. However, the violence is limited to arrows being fired and some clashes with tiny sticks and swords. There is no blood or injury detail. Most of the characters are fantasy creatures with super-human abilities and this reduces the impact and realism of any violence. The strongest scene shows a fairy character being shot with an arrow, which sticks in her side. There is no blood and the character's subsequent death simply sees her disintegrate into tiny particles of magic dust.

Threat

The moments of threat are brief and unlikely to upset young children. The baddie 'Boggan' characters are a bit creepy, with sharp teeth and outfits made out of rat skulls and skins. However, they are no scarier than the usual cartoon bad guys. In one scene, a good character is swarmed over by Boggans and left behind. We don't know what his fate is for some time, but he later reappears to join the fight and help save the forest. The scenes of mild fantasy violence and threat are well broken up by comic interludes.

Language

There is infrequent very mild bad language. More information about the language can be found on the main BBFC website or our free apps.

FREE BIRDS is an animated US film in which two turkeys travel back in time to the 17th century, in an attempt to remove their species from the menu of the traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Threat

The two turkeys find themselves in a variety of dangerous or scary situations, for example when they and other turkeys are chased by snarling dogs. However, these situations are comic and are always quickly resolved. There is occasional mild slapstick violence as the turkeys comically slap or punch one another. However, there is no blood or injury detail. In one scene a human character suddenly keels over and dies, and in another an adult turkey sacrifices himself in order to ensure the survival of several young turkeys and some unhatched eggs. It is implied that the older turkey is crushed beneath falling burning debris, but nothing is actually shown. The film moves on quickly, leaving the viewer with little opportunity to dwell on this particular turkey's fate.

Language

There is infrequent use of very mild bad language. For more information on the film's language, grown-ups can visit the main BBFC website or download the free BBFC app.

The film also includes some very mild humour relating to turkeys' backsides.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is a fantasy animation sequel in which a young scientist learns that his food making machine is creating live food monsters.

Threat

There are a few scenes of mild threat. In one scene, an orang-utan scientist approaches a strawberry character, flicking open a knife with brief sight of the blade in close shot. She wants to cut open the strawberry character to retrieve a USB stick. However the strawberry excretes a pile of jam from fear and inside the jam is the USB stick. There are also scenes of the main characters being chased by food monsters, such as cheeseburger spiders. The characters are almost always together and help each other as part of a team. There is a scene in which all the main characters are tied up and lowered towards a grinding machine, but they are rescued before coming to harm.

Theme

The rude humour includes a policeman farting when cutting through a cheese cobweb, a cheeseburger spider burping after swallowing the villain, and references to stretchy underpants that are 'wedgie proof'.
